How many software companies are located in Bangalore? How many are product based companies and how many are service based companies?

The economy of Bangalore plays an important role in the economy of India. Bangalore is a hub for many software companies and thousands of start-up sofware companies are based on Bengaluru.
The success of high techology (Hitech) industry in Bangalore contribues to not only Indian econony but also to the employment in India. IT comapies of Bangalore contribute to 35% of employment in India in the same sector.

It all started in 1980, with firms like Infosys and Wipro with head quarters in Bangalore. It was Texas Instrument, the first MNC to start a center in Bangalore. The IT industry boomed in mid 90's. The second big recession of 2008-09 has attracted many US giants, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Adobe, NetApp, Yahoo to name a few.

As of 2013, around two thousand software companies run their business from Bangalore.

Good answer. Gives an insight on the future s/w companies in Bangalore as well. What about software industry in Hyderabad and pune?

I guess, Apple is setting up their software development center in India, but that should be in Hyderabad, AFAIK.
