It depends! The fee for applying passport is based on age of the candidate, whether the it is applied for first time and also depends on the number of pages of the passport. The fee also depends on how urgently you need the passport. If you want it urgently, it will cost almost double. If the age of the candidate applying for passport is over 15 years, then you have the option to apply for 10 years validity or uptp 18 years age, in which case, the cost will be less.

The passport is valid for 10 years from the date of issue for all majors (age >= 18).

Below is the table of charges for issuing or reissuing passport, as of 2013 October.

Passport Status Age in years Validity 36 pages 60 pages Tatkal - 36 pages Tatkal- 60 pages
Fresh Passport 0-14 5 years 1000 N/A 3000 N/A
Fresh Passport 15-17 till the age of 18 years 1000 N/A 3000 N/A
Fresh Passport 15-17 10 years 1500 2000 3500 4000
Fresh Passport above 18 years 10 years 1500 2000 3500 4000

The fee for renew/re-issueing of the passport is same as fresh passport, unless you lost  your existing passport, whatever may be the reason. If you lost or damaged your exisisting passport, you will have to pay Rs 1500/- extra, becaues of the extra overhead involved in the Police verification.

Here is the link to official passport website to calculate the fee.

For our convenice, there are ATM machines available in all the passport offices.
